SIP register

The SIP register is managed by the ACMA. It includes all statutory infrastructure providers (SIPs) in Australia and the broadband service areas they are responsible for.

SIP service areas

NBN Co is the default SIP for all areas if no other SIP is identified. NBN Co may also have infrastructure available in areas where it is not the SIP.

New SIPs and their service areas are added to the SIP register as their networks are built and can connect services.

While all areas in Australia have a SIP, there may also be alternative infrastructure providers offering services in these areas.

SIP service area changes made by the minister

Designated service areas

The minister has the power to designate certain areas and the SIPs for those areas.

This power has been used to designate networks that were installed before the SIP regime started and where ownership of areas has changed.

View the current list of designated service areas.

Changing the SIP for a nominated service area

If needed, the minister can also declare that a carrier or CSP is no longer a SIP for a service area and specify a new SIP. Find out more in the Telecommunications (Nominated Service Area and Statutory Infrastructure Provider) Declaration 2020.
