Indicator 4 of the Media Diversity Measurement Framework looks at the extent to which professional news content in Australia provides a range and variety of news, including local content.
For our News media in Australia: 2025 report we have drawn on the work of the Public Interest Journalism Initiative’s (PIJI) Australian News Sampling Project. Through this project, PIJI has analysed sample news coverage for a geographic area over a month to determine the:
- number of 'public interest journalism’ and ‘other’ articles, as a percentage of total news output
- coverage of key news topics
- percentage of local content
- percentage of original and syndicated content.
We provide a summary of findings based on PIJI’s Australian News Sampling Project (ANSP) reports in the News media in Australia: 2025 report. We intend to publish an interactive report based on the ANSP in the first half of 2025.

Our News media in Australia series reports against the Media Diversity Measurement Framework. The Framework will provide a robust long-term evidence base to help inform government decision making in support of public interest journalism and media diversity in Australia. This work forms part of the government’s News Media Assistance Program.
