Media control and ownership compliance and investigations

We monitor and respond to complaints about control and ownership of Australian media.

Breaches of control and ownership rules

If we think someone has breached statutory control, media diversity or directorship rules, we will tell them to fix the issue within a certain time. This may be one month, 6 months, a year or 2 years.

We can give extensions if we receive an application 3 months before the end of the specified period. We will grant or refuse an extension within 45 days of receiving the application, or after receiving further information we requested.

Failure to comply with a notice is an offence under the Broadcasting Services Act 1992.

If we start an investigation, the ACMA has wide-ranging powers to obtain information. These include to require the production of documents, examine witnesses under oath and to hold public hearings.
