International influences
The international environment is an important input to our domestic planning and how we make regulatory decisions. International spectrum harmonisation and equipment standardisation influences:
- decisions on how spectrum is used in Australia
- how coexistence between different spectrum uses and users is achieved.
Harmonising how we use spectrum with other countries and making use of international standards allows people and businesses to benefit from:
- infrastructure and equipment availability, and lower costs
- global roaming and interoperability.
International forums
To help promote and protect our domestic interests, we:
- monitor international developments
- engage in international forums.
We lead Australia's participation in the:
- study groups of the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R)
- Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Wireless Group (AWG).
We have formed Australian radiocommunications study groups and a preparatory Group for the AWG to coordinate our activities in these forums.
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (DITRDCA) leads Australia’s participation in other key radiocommunications policy forums. These include the:
- World Radiocommunication Conference
- Radiocommunication Assembly
- APT Conference Preparatory Group for the WRC.
We work closely with DITRDCA to provide our expertise to their processes.
