Updates to the 'Media interests' snapshot

The ACMA’s 'Media interests' snapshot (snapshot) and associated maps (the infographics) provides an overview of the main interests in major commercial television and radio networks and associated newspapers.  It does not include all commercial television and radio networks and associated newspapers, shareholding interests under 5%, and does not necessarily show all companies in the corporate chain

From the snapshot, you can click through to maps showing the location and details of the relevant media operations.  The information in the infographics is drawn from a variety of sources including ASX notices, annual reports, company announcements and websites.

The snapshot and maps are updated when there is a significant change in the interests or licences/publications held.

November 2024

The ACMA updated several maps in November 2024, most recently on 14 November, to reflect the removal of 3 newspapers from the Associated Newspaper Register.

Updates to maps

Several maps were updated to reflect the removal of Australian Community Media newspapers: the Central Western Daily, the Daily Liberal and the Western Advocate from the Associated Newspaper Register. The newspapers no longer met the definition of ‘newspaper’ under section 6 of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992, due to a reduction in the number of days published in print form to 1 day per week.

August 2024

The ACMA updated the snapshot in August 2024, most recently on 28 August, to reflect information contained in change of control notifications under section 63 of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 and an ASX announcement.

Updates to snapshot

The snapshot was updated to reflect the passing away of Bill Caralis on 19 July 2024, with Broadcast Operations Pty Ltd being added to the snapshot. Kerry Stokes’ interest in Seven Group Holdings Ltd was changed from 52.57% to 50.93%.

June 2024

The ACMA updated the snapshot in June 2024, most recently on 17 June, to reflect information contained in ASX announcements.

Updates to snapshot

20 Cashews Pty Ltd’s interest in Southern Cross Media Group Limited was changed from 12.78% to 14.42%.  Bruce Gordon’s interest in Nine Entertainment Co Holdings Limited was changed from 14.89% to 14.95%. Kerry Stokes’ interest in Seven Group Holdings Ltd was changed from 53.74% to 52.57%.

May 2024

The ACMA updated the snapshot in May 2024, most recently on 23 May, to reflect information contained in ASX announcements.

Updates to snapshot

20 Cashews Pty Ltd’s interest in Southern Cross Media Group Limited was changed from 8.13% to 12.78%. Bruce Gordon’s interest in Nine Entertainment Co Holdings Limited was changed from 14.96% to 14.89%. Kerry Stokes’ interest in Seven Group Holdings Ltd was changed from 54.85 to 53.74%.

April 2024

The ACMA updated the snapshot in April 2024, most recently on 23 April, to reflect information contained in ASX announcements.

Updates to snapshot

20 Cashews Pty Ltd’s interest in Southern Cross Media Group Limited was changed to 7%. Kerry Stokes’ interest in Seven Group Holdings Limited was changed to 56.16%.

March 2024

The ACMA updated the snapshot and several maps in March 2024, most recently on 26 March, to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement.

Updates to snapshot

The snapshot was amended to reflect the acquisition by 20 Cashews Pty Ltd, Alexander Waislitz and Antony Catalano of a 6% interest in Southern Cross Media Group Limited.

The maps for 20 Cashews Pty Ltd, Alexander Waislitz and Antony Catalano were amended to reflect their acquisition of a 6% interest in Southern Cross Media Group Limited.

February 2024

The ACMA updated the snapshot in February 2024, most recently on 2 February, to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement.

Bruce Gordon’s interests in Nine Entertainment Co. Holdings Limited were changed from 14.95% to 14.96%.

December 2023

The ACMA updated the snapshot on 14 and 21 December, to reflect information contained in ASX announcements.

Bruce Gordon’s interests in Nine Entertainment Co. Holdings Limited were changed from 14.94% to 14.95%. Seven Group Holdings Limited’s interests in Seven West Media Limited were changed from 39.83% to 40.20%.

November 2023

The ACMA updated the snapshot and 3 maps in November 2023, most recently on 24 November, to reflect information contained in ASX announcements.

Updates to snapshot

The snapshot was amended to reflect the acquisition by Kerry Stokes, Seven Group Holdings Limited, Seven West Media Limited of a 14.9% interest in ARN Media Limited.  Seven Group Holdings Limited’s interest in Seven West Media Limited was changed to 39.83%. Rupert Murdoch’s role at News Corporation was changed to Chairman Emeritus. Lachlan Murdoch’s role at News Corporation was changed to Chair.

The maps for Kerry Stokes, Seven Group Holdings Limited and Seven West Media Limited were changed to reflect their acquisition of a 14.9% interest in ARN Media Limited.

July 2023

The ACMA updated the snapshot and 3 maps in July 2023, most recently on 3 July, to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement.

Updates to snapshot

The snapshot was updated to reflect the acquisition by ARN Media Limited of an interest of 14.8% in Southern Cross Media Group Limited, based on information contained in an ASX announcement.

Updates to maps

The maps for ARN Media Limited, Southern Cross Austereo and Southern Cross Media Group Limited were changed to reflect ARN Media Limited acquisition of an interest in Southern Cross Media Group Ltd.

May 2023

The ACMA updated the snapshot and 7 maps in May 2023, most recently on 29 May, to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement.

HT&E Limited was renamed to ARN Media Limited.

Updates to maps

The maps for Grant Broadcasters Pty Ltd, ARN Media Limited, Janet Cameron, News Corporation and News Corp Australia, Southern Cross Austereo and Southern Cross Media Group were changed to reflect the renaming of HT&E Limited to ARN Media Limited.

March 2023

The ACMA updated the snapshot and 5 maps in March 2023, most recently on 9 March, to reflect information contained in ASX announcements and a change of control notification under section 63 of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992.

Updates to snapshot

Grant Broadcasters Pty Ltd’s interests in HT&E Limited were changed from 11.55% to 11.63%. News Corp Australia’s interests in HT&E Limited were changed from 13.12% to 13.63%. Kerry Stokes’ interests in Seven Group Holdings Ltd were changed from 57.07% to 57.08%. Seven Group Holdings Ltd’s interests in Seven West Media Ltd were changed from 39.19% to 38.91%.  These changes were made to reflect information contained in ASX announcements.

The maps for Grant Broadcasters Pty Ltd, HT&E Limited, Janet Cameron, News Corporation and News Corp Australia were changed to reflect the sale by HT&E Limited of radio station 4KQ Brisbane to a subsidiary of Sports Entertainment Group Ltd.

March 2022

The ACMA updated the snapshot and 2 maps in March 2022, most recently on 3 March, to reflect that ViacomCBS Inc. was renamed to Paramount Global. 

February 2022

The ACMA updated the infographics in February 2022, most recently on 8 February to reflect information contained in ASX Announcements and notifications of changes in control under section 63 of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992. Changes were made to the snapshot and 12 maps.

Updates to snapshot

The snapshot was updated to reflect the sale by Prime Media Group Ltd (now named PRT Company Ltd)(Prime) of its business and assets to a subsidiary of Seven West Media Ltd, and the acquisition by HT&E Limited (through its subsidiary Australian Radio Network Pty Ltd), of 46 commercial radio licences from Grant Broadcasters Pty Ltd.  Grant Broadcasters Pty Ltd also acquired an interest of 11.55% in HT&E Limited. News Corp Australia’s interests in HT&E Limited were also changed from 14.8% to 13.12% to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement.

The maps for Kerry Stokes, Seven Group Holdings, Seven West Media, Grant Broadcasters, Janet Cameron, News Corp Australia and News Corporation, Antony Catalano, Alexander Waislitz, 20 Cashews Pty Ltd and Bruce Gordon were updated to reflect the above mentioned transactions.  The map for Nine Entertainment Co. was updated to reflect an announcement by Nine and Ace Radio.

September 2021

The ACMA updated the infographics in September 2021, most recently on 30 September to reflect information contained in ASX and ASIC Announcements and notifications of changes in control under section 63 of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992. Changes were made to the snapshot and 2 maps.

Updates to snapshot

Bruce Gordon’s interests in Prime Media Group (Prime) were changed from 14.37% to 11.37% to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement.  Kerry Stokes’ interests Seven Group Holdings Limited were changed from 57.33% to 57.07% reflect information contained in an ASX announcement.  20 Cashews Pty Ltd’s interests in Prime were change from 19.99% to 22.99% to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement.

Updates to maps

The maps for Bill Caralis and Super Radio Network were amended to add additional commercial radio stations in Alice Springs, Atherton and Innisfail.    

July 2021

The ACMA updated the infographics in July 2021, most recently on 19 and 26 July to reflect information contained in ASX and ASIC Announcements, changes to the ACMA’s Associated Newspaper Register (ANR) and changes to television program affiliations for WIN Network and Southern Cross Austereo. Changes were made to the snapshot and 12 maps.

Bruce Gordon’s interests in Prime Media Group were changed from 11.59% to 14.37% to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement.  Kerry Stokes’ interests Seven Group Holdings Limited were changed from 61.12% to 57.33% to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement.  News Corp Australia’s interests in HT&E Limited were changed from 14.7% to 14.8% to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement.  Antony Catalano and Alexander Waislitz, 20 Cashews Pty Ltd, Rural Press Pty Ltd and Australian Community Media were added to the snapshot.

Updates to maps

The maps for Southern Cross Austereo, Southern Cross Media Group, Bruce Gordon, WIN Network, Kerry Stokes, Seven Group Holdings Limited, Seven West Media Limited and Prime Media Group were amended to update on-air IDs for television and radio stations.  

The maps for Kerry Stokes, Seven Group Holdings Limited and Seven West Media Limited were also updated to reflect the removal of The Kalgoorlie Miner from the Associated Newspaper Register in relation to the Kalgoorlie RA1 and the Kalgoorlie TV1 licence areas.

The News Corporation, News Corp Australia, Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch maps were updated to reflect the removal by the ACMA of The Daily Examiner, The Northern Star and the Warwick Daily News from the ANR.  Maps were included for Antony Catalano, Alexander Waislitz, 20 Cashews Pty Ltd, Rural Press Pty Ltd and Australian Community Media.

December 2020

The ACMA updated the infographics in December 2020, most recently on 9 December to reflect information contained in ASX and ASIC Announcements and changes to the ACMA’s Associated Newspaper Register (ANR). Changes were made to the snapshot and 11 maps.

Updates to snapshot

Kerry Stokes’ interests Seven Group Holdings Limited were changed from 65.82% to 61.12% to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement. News Corp Australia’s interests in HT&E Limited were changed from 14.64% to 14.7 to reflect information contained in an ASX announcement. Other changes were made to reflect a current brand and company name.

Updates to maps

The News Corporation, News Corp Australia, Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch maps were updated to reflect the removal by the ACMA of the Fraser Coast Chronicle, Sunshine Coast Daily, The Bundaberg NewsMail, The Daily Mercury, The Gympie Times, The Morning Bulletin, The Observer and  The Queensland Times from the ANR.  The maps for Kerry Stokes, Seven Group Holdings Ltd and Seven West Media were updated to reflect to entry by the ACMA of The Kalgoorlie Miner in the ANR.  Minor changes were also made to several other maps. 

March 2020

The ACMA updated the infographics in March 2020, most recently on 9 March to reflect information contained in ASX Announcements, and the removal by the ACMA of The Kalgoorlie Miner from the Associated Newspaper Register. Changes were made to the snapshot and several maps.

Updates to snapshot

The snapshot was updated to reflect acquisition by Seven West Media Limited (SWM) acquired 14.90% of the Prime Media Group Limited (Prime).

Updates to maps

The maps for SWM, Seven Group Holdings Limited and Kerry Stokes were updated to reflect their acquisition of direct and indirect interests (respectively) in Prime, and the removal of The Kalgoorlie Miner from the Associated Newspaper Register.  The maps for Southern Cross Media Group Limited (Southern Cross) and Southern Cross Austereo were updated to reflect Southern Cross’ acquisition of SWM’s Redwave radio network in Western Australia.

December 2019

The ACMA updated the infographics in December 2019, most recently on 9 December to reflect information contained in ASX Announcements. Changes were made to the snapshot.

Updates to snapshot

Bruce Gordon’s interests in Nine Entertainment Co. Holdings Limited was changed from 14.12% to 14.94% reflect information contained in ASX Announcements. 

Nine’s interest in Macquarie Media Limited was changed from 98.64% to 100% reflect information contained in an ASX Announcement.

October 2019

The ACMA updated the infographics in October 2019, most recently on 15 October to reflect information contained in ASX Announcements. Changes were made to the snapshot and two maps.

Updates to snapshot

Bruce Gordon’s interest in Prime Media Limited was changed from 3.25% to 11.59% to reflect information contained in an ASX Announcement.

Nine’s interest in Macquarie Media Limited was changed from 54.5% to 88.78% and then several changes in Nine’s interests between 88.78% to 98.64%, to reflect information contained in ASX Announcements.

John Singleton’s interest in Macquarie Media Limited has been removed from the snapshot to reflect information contained in an ASX Announcement.

Updates to maps

The map for Bruce Gordon was updated to reflect his indirect shareholdings in Macquarie Media Limited through Nine and his interests in the Nine associated newspapers.  The map for Nine was updated to reflect changes in the interests held by Nine in Macquarie Media Limited.

July 2019 update

The ACMA updated the infographics on 26 July 2019. A change was made to the snapshot and one map.

Update to snapshot

The snapshot was updated to remove a note regarding the merger of Nine Entertainment Co. Holdings Limited (Nine) and Fairfax Media Limited on 7 December 2018. The map for Nine was amended to reflect the acquisition by Antony Catalano, Thorney Investment Group and others of the Australian Community Media and Publishing regional associated newspapers from Nine on 30 June 2019. 

June 2019 update

The ACMA updated the infographics on 25 June 2019. A change was made to the snapshot.

Update to snapshot

The maps for Super Radio Network and Bill Caralis were updated to reflect the acquisition by Broadcast Operations Pty Ltd of Bathurst Broadcasters Pty Ltd and associated radio broadcast licenses from Camplin Broadcasters Pty Ltd.

May 2019 update
