Spam compliance alerts

Why was I sent a compliance alert?

We’ve sent you an alert because someone has made a complaint that your business is not following Australia’s spam laws.

The alert is a chance for your businesses to review its spam compliance.

What should I do next?

  1. Check your consent to send messages

You can only send commercial messages (such as email or SMS) after you have permission from the person you’re sending them to. People can agree to receive your messages directly, or sometimes, you may be able to infer consent. You can’t infer consent just because a number is published online or somewhere else, there are strict rules about when you can do this. Find out more about consent.

  1. Review your processes and content

You must make sure that each message:

  • says who it’s from
  • has contact details
  • explains how to unsubscribe

You also need to make sure that you unsubscribe people within 5 business days if they request it.

If we see serious or ongoing compliance issues, we may investigate. Find out about recent actions we’ve taken.
