Broadcasters need a licence to broadcast TV or radio in Australia. They have to follow:
- the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 and determinations made under that act
- a range of standards
- codes of practice that they help to develop, to ensure their content meets community expectations
The rules may be different for commercial broadcasters and those who broadcast to customers with a subscription. They may also vary between:
- TV broadcasters and radio broadcasters
- community broadcasters and those who broadcast for profit
