Digital community radio

There are special arrangements for digital community radio licensees.

To be eligible to transmit a digital community radio service, an incumbent analog community radio service must have either:

  • been planned in a commercial radio licence area
  • had the licence area determined by us, or by the Broadcasting Services Act 1992, to be the same as the commercial radio licence area

The Broadcasting Services (Deemed Digital Radio Licence Areas) Determination 2017 outlines the digital community radio licence areas that we have deemed.

Once a community radio service is eligible to provide digital radio services, it needs to seek access to the digital radio multiplex transmitter through the relevant digital community radio broadcasting representative company.

The rules for forming a digital community radio broadcasting representative company are outlined in section 9C of the Radiocommunications Act 1992.
