Rules for what you see or hear on TV or radio

Broadcasters need a licence to broadcast TV or radio in Australia. They have to follow:

• the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 and determinations made under that act
• a range of standards
• codes of practice that they help to develop, to ensure their content meets community expectations

The rules may be different for commercial broadcasters and those who broadcast to customers with a subscription. They may also vary between:

• TV broadcasters and radio broadcasters
• community broadcasters and those who broadcast for profit
