Check the phone number rules to follow

There are rules for:

• allocating, transferring or surrendering a phone number
• porting a number
• giving information to the integrated public number database
• paying the annual numbering charge

The rules are in the:

• Telecommunications Numbering Plan 2015 
• Telecommunications Act 1997
• Telecommunications (Annual Charge) Determination 2014

There are also phone number rules in industry codes, including the:

• Integrated Public Number Database Code
• Mobile Number Portability Code
• Local Number Portability Code
• Inbound Number Portability Code
• Rights of Use of Numbers Code

If we find that you aren't following the rules, we may respond by:

• giving you a formal warning
• making you pay a penalty
• taking legal action
