Quick summary
The auction for the remaining 2x30 MHz (1755-1785 MHz paired with 1850-1880 MHz) of the 1800 MHz bands, also known as Personal Communications Services (PCS) bands, closed on 15 March 2000 after 138 bidding rounds with a total of $1.327 billion raised. The ACA offered the bands as 12 parcels each of 2x2.5 MHz (a total of 2x30 MHz) in each of the five mainland state capital cities. The successful applicants were Hutchison, One.Tel, Telstra, and Vodafone. Hutchison and One.Tel obtained licences in all five major markets, Telstra obtained licences in Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and Sydney, and Vodafone obtained licences in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Perth.

The Radiocommunications Act 1992 guaranteed continuity for these incumbent services until the end of the period set out in the Minister’s re-allocation declarations, known as the reallocation period. For incumbent services in these 1.8 GHz bands, the re-allocation period in metropolitan areas ended on 1 January 2002. |
