Industry codes of practice

Industry-developed codes of practice ensure broadcasting content is in line with community expectations.

We may put extra conditions on licensees if they do not follow the codes of practice.

Industry groups have developed codes of practice in consultation with the ACMA. We then monitor these codes and deal with unresolved complaints from viewers and listeners.

Industry codes should be regularly reviewed to ensure they provide appropriate community safeguards. View more information on code reviews and the status of current reviews.

Radio codes

The ACMA has registered new community radio broadcasting codes of practice (2025), which will commence on 1 July 2025. In the meantime, the existing 2008 code continues to operate.

More information about the CBAA code review can be found on the CBAA website.

National broadcasters

Australia’s national broadcasters (ABC and SBS) develop their own codes of practice, and these do not need to be approved or registered by the ACMA. The current national broadcasters’ codes cover content on both TV and radio.
