Aeronautical radio licence

You need an aeronautical licence to communicate with aircraft from the ground, such as for air traffic control.

Why you need an aeronautical licence

You need an aeronautical licence to operate a station that provides:

  • air traffic control
  • aerodrome radio information
  • private company radio at an airport or airfield
  • other airport or aerodrome services

You can only get an aeronautical licence for a station that:

  • is not fixed to an aircraft
  • operates on aeronautical frequencies
  • is for operating an aircraft, airport or aerodrome
  • for aircraft, includes a mobile station on the aircraft or ground that communicates with aircraft

The Radiocommunications (Interpretation) Determination 2015 defines aeronautical licences.
