Options for maritime ship licences
There are 4 options for maritime ship licences:
- ship station class B assigned
- ship station class B non-assigned
- ship station class C assigned
- ship station class C non-assigned
You need separate licences for:
- boats that carry MF/HF marine radio equipment (class B)
- trading boats under Commonwealth survey (class C)
- each coast station
You must be qualified to operate a marine radio.
Ship station class B assigned
This licence option is for stations on a boat that:
- use non-standard maritime frequencies
- sends and receives on behalf of the public
We will allocate you a frequency in these bands:
- maritime mobile
- maritime mobile-satellite
- radiodetermination, including radars
You must operate on the frequencies specified on your licence.
There is a separate fee for each frequency.
To operate on another frequency band, you may need a different apparatus licence.
Ship station class B non assigned
This licence option is for stations on a boat that use standard frequencies in the HF marine band.
You can:
- use standard maritime frequencies
- sends and receives on behalf of the public
You can use these frequencies:
- maritime mobile
- maritime mobile-satellite
- radiodetermination, including radars
You will also need a class B assigned licence if your ship station uses standard and non-standard frequencies.
To operate on another frequency band, you may need a different apparatus licence.
Ship station class C assigned
This licence option is for stations:
- on a boat that uses non-standard maritime frequencies
- that are equipped in line with the Navigation Act 2012
We will allocate you a frequency in these bands:
- maritime mobile
- maritime mobile-satellite
- radiodetermination, including radars
You must operate on the frequencies specified on your licence.
There is a separate fee for each frequency.
To operate on another frequency band, you may need a different apparatus licence.
Ship station class C non assigned
This licence option is for ship stations on a boat that are equipped in line with the Navigation Act 2012.
You can use these frequencies:
- maritime mobile
- maritime mobile-satellite
- radiodetermination, including radars
You will also need a class C assigned licence if your ship station uses standard and non-standard frequencies.
To operate on another frequency band, you may need a different apparatus licence.
