The ACMA has been working with industry to refine our guidance on the requirements for carriage service providers to obtain customer name information and verify customer identity when using the real-time financial transaction method under the Telecommunications (Service Provider – Identity Checks for Prepaid Mobile Carriage Services) Determination 2017 (the Prepaid Determination).
The guidance note sets out the ACMA’s approach to assessing compliance with the rules. It will facilitate a common understanding of what carriage service providers must do to ensure that the systems and processes they have in place to obtain customer name information and check customer identity are consistent with the rules in the Prepaid Determination.
Carriage service providers should take the opportunity to consider whether their operations are consistent with the ACMA’s expectations as set out in the guidance note.
This work with industry followed an investigation into TPG Telecom Limited’s compliance with the Prepaid Determination and the ACMA’s acceptance of an enforceable undertaking from TPG Telecom.
