Outcome

Feedback supported our proposal to vary the 1800 MHz band instrument with no changes.

We made the Radiocommunications (Unacceptable Levels of Interference — 1800 MHz Band) Determination Variation 2024 (No. 1) on 6 December 2024.

Previous consultation: The issue

In 2021, we reviewed and updated the 1710–1785 MHz and 1805–1880 MHz band (collectively known as the 1800 MHz band) spectrum licensing technical framework. This was part of our spectrum licence technical framework review.

In 2023, as part of the sunsetting of legislative instruments process, we remade the instruments in the following bands:

  • 700 MHz
  • 1800 MHz
  • 2 GHz
  • 2.5 GHz
  • 2.5 GHz mid-band gap.

It was used to align the clauses and procedures, where possible, of the various spectrum licence technical frameworks.

Since making the Radiocommunications (Unacceptable Levels of Interference –1800 MHz Band) Determination 2023, we have identified 2 drafting errors:

  1. Use of an incorrect reference bandwidth for expressing radiated power (RP). The correct reference bandwidth is 30 kHz.
  2. Inclusion of a term by mistake in the path loss equation. This was not included in the previous path loss equation used for the 1800 MHz band, which is proposed to be deleted.

The variations in the Radiocommunications (Unacceptable Levels of Interference – 1800 MHz Band) Determination Variation 2024 (No. 1) will correct these drafting errors. You can find this in the key documents box above.
