Help shape the future of Australia’s public airwaves

""

The ACMA today released a draft plan for boosting Australia’s wireless connectivity and mobile networks over the next five years.

The draft 2025–30 Five-year spectrum outlook (FYSO) lays out the ACMA’s planned steps for harnessing Australia’s spectrum – the radiofrequencies that carry mobile data, satellite transmissions and broadcast signals – and taking advantage of recent developments, including in emerging low earth orbit satellite (LEOsat) technologies.

A key focus of the draft FYSO is on the future options for spectrum licences due to expire between 2028 and 2032. These expiring licences are used to support and deliver services fundamental to our society and the modern economy, from wireless and mobile broadband, telecommunications, broadcasting of live news and sport, and rail safety.

The draft FYSO also outlines ongoing support for technology and innovation in the satellite sector, particularly those with the potential to enhance regional development and connectivity, such as LEOsats.

Other highlights from the report include advancing our planning process for the upper 6 GHz spectrum band, which has been flagged for expanding Australia’s wi-fi and mobile broadband uses.

The ACMA has published the draft 2025–30 FYSO on its website. Submissions close on 17 April 2025.
