Glossary E – G

Information on our website often includes abbreviations, acronyms, technical language and jargon. To assist you, a glossary of commonly used terms is given here, with explanations.

The glossary is provided in the following alphabetical breakdown:

Commonly used
terms
Explanation

EIRP

equivalent isotropically radiated power
The power supplied to the antenna multiplied by the antenna gain in a given direction relative to an isotropic antenna. The higher the EIRP of a radiocommunications system, the higher its potential for interference.

e-marketing

electronic marketing
The use of web-based applications and services to select and segment customers, develop and execute marketing campaigns, and distribute leads to sales channels.

EIRP

equivalent isotropically radiated power
The power supplied to the antenna multiplied by the antenna gain in a given direction relative to an isotropic antenna. The higher the EIRP of a radiocommunications system, the higher its potential for interference.

EMC

electromagnetic compatibility
Ability of electrical or electronic devices to function satisfactorily without causing electromagnetic interference to other devices, in particular, radio and television receivers.

EME

electromagnetic energy
Energy of electric and magnetic field components of a radio wave.

EMI

electromagnetic interference
Electromagnetic radiation emitted by electrical circuits as a by-product of their normal operation, which causes interference or noise to be induced in other circuits that interrupts, obstructs, degrades or limits their effective performance. EMI can affect radio and television reception.

EMR

electromagnetic radiation
Combined electric and magnetic field components of a radio wave.

ENUM

electronic numbering
Protocol translating numbers into a format that can be recognised by the internet system, enabling telephone and fax numbers to be linked to internet and email addresses.

ESA

exchange service area
Area covered by a telecommunications network exchange.

ESAC

Emergency Services Advisory Committee
Committee that advises ACMA about emergency services matters.

ESO

emergency service organisation
Police, ambulance or fire brigade service.

ETSI

European Telecommunications Standards Institute
The European telecommunications standards-setting body.

Exchange

Network node where various numbers and types of communication lines are switched at the command of the telecommunications user or network operator. Exchanges operate at local, trunk and international levels.

FCT

fixed cellular terminal
Device carrying one or more SIM cards that enables fixed-to-mobile or mobile-to-mobile calls to be delivered onto a mobile network, resulting in calls being charged at lower call rates. Also known as a GSM gateway.

FLRN

freephone and local rate number
Telephone number beginning with 180 (freephone) or 13 (local rate).

FM

frequency modulation radio
Mode of radio broadcasting in which the frequency of the transmitted wave is modulated or varied with the amplitude or pitch of the signal, providing good immunity to electrical interference and consistent quality reception during the day and night. Geographical coverage varies, but for a high-power FM transmitter can be up to 100 kilometres. Frequencies used for FM broadcasts are expressed in megahertz (MHz).

Free TV Australia

Industry body responsible for code of practice for commercial television.

FSA

field service area
One of 44 broad geographic regions in Telstra’s fixed telephone network.

FTP

file transfer protocol
Protocol for downloading large computer files from the internet.

GB

Gigabyte
A billion bytes. See byte(s).

Gbit/s

Gigabits per second
Data transfer rate of a billion bits per second. See bit/s.

geographic numbers

Numbers used for local telephone services and related voicemail, facsimile and internet dial-up services, and termination numbers for freephone and local rate services. Also known as local numbers.

GHz

Gigahertz
One billion Hertz (where one Hertz is the measurement of frequency equal to one cycle of electromagnetic radiation per second). See also kHz and MHz.

GMPCS

global mobile personal communications by satellite
Combinations of interrelated devices capable of transmitting intelligence between two or more spatially separate radio stations, one of which at least is mobile, by satellite.

GSM

global system for mobiles
Second generation digital cellular network standard that uses a time division multiple access technique to multiplex signals onto a single channel in a rotated sequence of time slots, with each user having exclusive access to a time slot.
