Australia is working towards the switch-over to digital television. Free-to-air television in Australia is progressively switching, region by region, from analog to digital-only transmissions, in a process that will be completed by the end of 2013.
Digital television is more efficient, more interactive, offers better picture and sound quality, and can deliver innovative new services for Australian consumers. In addition, going digital will free up valuable spectrum for new services such as wireless broadband or new mobile phone services. However, in order to free up this spectrum for new uses, digital television services across Australia will need to be restacked. As a result, some TV channels will be changing frequency, and many viewers will need to retune their TV, set-top box or digital recorder to continue to receive all of the free-to-air digital TV channels.
